Marvin has become one of the more popular Looney Tunes characters in recent years, similar to the meteoric rise in star power of Taz, the Tasmanian Devil. Both of them were actually in very few of the original shorts, but have seen renewed interests with their own cartoons, appearances in Space Jam and video games, and tons of merchandise. Both Taz and Marvin are two of my favorites, alongside Daffy, Wile E and Roadrunner -- but I would end up always choosing Marvin as my most fave. I wouldn't want to make him angry!

Marvin is one of the main subjects I wanted to make my website about. When I was first given the assignment to make a web page, I realized that it was Marvin the Martian's 50th Birthday! Happy 50th, Marvin! May you finally get that Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator you've been wanting all these years. The design of Marvin is great (a Martian Roman centurion with no mouth), along with his voice and the way he walks, "you've made me very angry, very angry indeed." His politeness as a supervillain makes him different than other Looney Tune antagonists like Elmer, Taz or Yosemite Sam. That same politeness is also contrasted with his immense power to destroy worlds. What a role model!

Chuck Jones created this unique character (along with so many others). The incredible Maurice Noble backgrounds of Mars are wild and imaginative, and the many gags like instant-growing Martians, the Disintegrating Pistol, or even his trusty dog K-9 all parody the sci-fi b-movies of the era. But Marvin has proved more timeless, and is now found in comics and toys and shirts and school supplies.

I was a bit disappointed at first when the marketing for Space Jam made me think Marvin wouldn't appear, but then he shows up at as the referee. Given that the villains of the movie are *another* type of space alien, his impartialiaty as a ref makes a lot of sense.

At the Warner Bros. store, there is even an interactive playset called "Marvin's Rocket" which is fun for kids, and plays videos on screens, as well as quotes and sound effects when the various buttons are pressed.
